Crypto, particularly proof-of-work and Bitcoin, has been under attack from environmentalists for quite some time. It was just in June of 2022 that New York State was on the verge of becoming the first state in the nation to partially ban some energy-intensive Bitcoin mining operations. New York State Governor Kathy Hochul was caught in the crossfire of the ongoing battle between environmentalists and crypto enthusiasts. The battle has now gone to the federal level, with the Biden Administration appearing to side with the environmentalist. On September 8th, The White House issued a press release titled; “FACT SHEET: Climate and Energy Implications of Crypto-Assets in the United States.” The Fact sheet was a brief for the 46-page accompanying document to further explain the agenda of the Biden Administration. The document clarified Biden’s vision;
Climate change is one of the most pressing problems confronting our nation and our world, and President Biden has taken bold steps to address it with legislation and policy. Among the President’s commitments are: protecting communities from pollution, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030, achieving a carbon pollution-free electricity grid by 2035, and reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions no later than 2050.
Cardano Founder Charles Hoskinson shared his thoughts on the 46-page document and pointed out the meat & potatoes of the document, which lies on page 7. According to Hoskinson, here is will you will find what they are really in store for Crypto, particularly Bitcoin. What the government has in mind for crypto isn’t great, but Hoskinson believes he has a solution.
